Greater Binghamton
The Greater Binghamton area can be defined in many different ways all revolving around the City of Binghamton.
The United States Census bureau defines the Binghamton MSA as including all residents of Broome and Tioga counties in New York. By this measure, the area has approximately 250,000 residents and is a roughly the 175th largest (out of 400) metro areas in the United States.
By an alternate definition (used by retail developers, etc), the "pull" of the Greater Binghamton region (those who work, shop and come to the urban core from surrounding areas for amenities), is defined by a 30 to 40 mile radius of the city of Binghamton. This radius encompasses about 346,000 people. [1]
The Greater Binghamton name was adopted by the region for marketing and identification purposes as a result of the BC Plan in 2002, an in-depth study of the area's economic conditions. That plan suggested re-branding the region under the the Greater Binghamton name. Since that time, many region-wide organizations or entities have been re-branded including the Broome Chamber (now Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce) and the Binghamton Regional Airport (now Greater Binghamton Airport.)
